We are a group of students from Aalborg University in Denmark.

As a part of our current studies we are doing this survey regarding the communication and the new form of interaction within 3D virtual worlds. Our project is focused on the avatar, not the real-life user, so the questions are very straight forward and of course completely anonymous.

Many of the physical gestures, we make in real-life (e.g. facial expressions, and ironic remarks etc.) are difficult to translate into Second Life. Which make the communication hard to perceive.

Our goal is therefore to improve the tools of communication in Second Life, as well as on the Internet itself.

The questionnaire consists of 20 questions and will therefore take not more than a few minutes to complete.
We thank you in advance and remind you once more, that survey is completely anonymous.

Best regards
Rasmus Sandholm (Sandholm Perse), Thomas Overholt Hansen (Os Bessie), Rasmus Amby Makwarth (Rasmus Jimenez)

Are you sure you have the right URL? The one you listed goes to this survey:

1) Have you ever bought a custom made saddle?
2) Would you ever buy a custom made saddle?

Thinking of equipting some pornies or something?

Also, please be sure you've read THIS document on doing research in SL.

"NEIGHHH!" sez the Torse. :)

I like surveys, but Rasmus, you should look at LL's RESEARCH ETHICS policy thingy first.

The survey appeared mostly harmless and quick; good luck with your studies.

You should probably contact Linden Lab following their research ethics policy, but having taken the survey I can't imagine them having issue with it.

I was stymied a bit when asked the age of my avatar. The av definitely is not a recreation of my RL self (i.e. my RL ears are not as big as my face or pointy) and it has pure white hair, yet a child's body. Weird feeling trying to put an age on him. =)

Why does your survey assume that we each have only one avatar in SL? Or one sex? Some of us have dozens of each and change on a whim. For example, yes one of my avatars looks like myself in SL, but all the others do not; there was no place to explain that.

Yeah the avatar age thing is a little odd. I never thought my avatar(s) had an age... and then upon thinking I wanted to answer he was a couple months old... which wasn't a choice.

The survey also assumes that we actually have gestures in SL. Those of us with slow computers don't get to see them. Not to mention those avatars that are robots or tinies or other strange creatures that don't have limbs to gesture with. The survey would be good if it were about a virtual world that actually had gestures though... does There have them?
