i was just reading through some threads and had an idea.. a view of a possible future.

what if the forums close temporarily?

not for a month or two, but at least 6 months.. then return?

what would be the effect?

is it possible that during that period that people will come to know certain forums are good for certain things? such as Scripting, Content Creation, Funny stuff, Advertising, et al.

then, whatever amount of time later, these forums are re-opened in a scaled down format.

is it possible that these forums would perform a more informative role? would the official forums become more useful as a tool to help new residents? would people then be used to visiting other forums for fringe activities and some not-so-fringe? possibly an accepted standard could become known for advertising.. another for fun.. another for freedom of voice.. and so on.

if these forums return after a long hiatus, it could work out well for everyone.

i think i would like to present this idea to LL at the SLCC..

what are your thoughts on this? could both the official forums AND resident-run forums benefit?

could SLers?

Would that herald the end of the 'two weeks' ?

You know, that's not entirely a bad idea. I'm not sure I support it, but I don't object to it.

I really hope they keep the content + classifieds forums, I think those are the most valuable.

Siggy, i know.. the whole "two weeks" thing didn't quite pan out..

i'm not sure if you know this or not, but i was "un-ResModded" for a couple weeks at the beginning. so, it started out following the game plan.. but after phase two or so, it all started faltering fromt he original gameplan.

and then with the forums closing being imminent, why bother training new ResMods so they could just be shuffled out?

geez.. sorry to get all serious and long-winded with that.. lol.

Francis, i know the content stuff will be around for awhile.. Robin mentioned something about making sure stuff like Content Creation and Scripting and whatnot would be given time to make sure nothing gets lost and resources are kept as available resources for awhile and defeinitely wouldn't end before there was a better program in place.

I bring it up only to remind the community of the nature of the beast - and so long as just one person remembers and brings it up, the chance of another 'bait and switch' is lessened.

And yes - thats what it was... placating the community on a policy change (one that could hand the longevity of a persons account into the hands of another community member) with 'guidelines' that once instituted weren't adhered to..

Promise one thing to make the populus happy - then deliver another and hope noone notices... Well, I noticed... and hope I made other people notice.

To tell the truth the combination of linking the forums to SL in such a manner, then handing the moderation over to other players is the biggest reason I'm not sorry to see the forums go bye bye.

I for one am happy to see the discussion forums go ONLY because it gets rid of the resmod program cause that idea really really sucked.
