Ok so I am newbie. I must have missed something somewhere. How to you try on something like clothing, boot, belt, etc BEFORE buying it? It seems I have to buy the itme before I can try it on only to discover I do not like it, wrong color, doesn't look good, etc.

At the moment there is no try on before you buy options. Some places have demos you can buy for 0 or 1L and try on but it will have an unusual texture or say "demo" all over it. For the most part you just buy and take a risk.
Edit to add: Often if it's just the wrong color or needs an adjustment/alteration the creator will be willing to work with you.

And if a pair off boots cost you 75-200L how much are that compared with IRL.. after a while you will learn where to shop or not.. that our SL life.. /Tina

I was thinking of this as a creator of clothing, making demos for a lot of my items. It just would take so long to do and so much work. Plus all of the extra boxes needed to do that.
IM the creator and maybe they will model it for you?? I've done it myself a few times.

You could go to the preview grid and see if that sim is there.
You could then buy the items and try them.
Of course nothing on the preview grid is transferable back to the main grid.

Of course nothing on the preview grid is transferable back to the main grid. Not much of an option, alas, because so few of the shopping areas are present in the preview grid. (The ones that are: Grignano, Miramare, and the vendors in the Edge. The PixelSpa in Chartreuse has sometimes been part of the preview grid, but isn't there currently.) And even in the areas that are there, some of the vendors don't work; if the shop uses a network vendor and the sim with the SERVER isn't in the preview grid, it won't work, and to make matters worse, it will typically take your preview money and deliver nothing. But if you want to try on a furry avatar, make sure to visit Lusk in the preview grid. The vendors for all the Luskwood avatars are there.
