Producers - Have we reached the end of the need?

Many moons ago I was informed by a Linden that there were "Producers" in the world. A paid person producing professional level content to promote the world. This makes perfect business sense all-in-all. But have we reached the point where un-paid individual people have produced enough content to carry the world forward?

We've been producing literature for the last few thousand years. I think we've got enough to carry us on for the next thousand. ;)

There's never enough. Always need fresh ideas.

Is this something to do with some kind of open source ideal and people 'producing art for the sake of art'?

As I've said before, that model will be plausible as soon as tier is free and SL is 'open source'.

I enjoy seeing so many creations here, and hope for many more.

I have this YUGE wishlist of things I have yet to see come true in SL!

Some have, just recently... and still there are many left (and the list keeps growing).

Enabran,

I think you may have misunderstood the question...

I don't think he was asking if there is enough content in the world...
The question as I understood it, was:

"Do we still need Linden Lab subsidised producers to make 'Professional Level' content, when there are so many good makers of content that are not on LL's payroll?"

As far as I can see, this question in no way threatens the market, and in fact could stimulate some discussion about how the market has been affected by the presence of "Professional" content alongside the "Amateur" stuff that is doing just as well, or better, in the open market.

In my opinion, we ARE making professional content.

I'm not sure that there are producers being given subsidies. Maybe the developer incentive, but that's peanuts.

he is asserting that there is an undercover "Linden" artist posing as a player and creating professional quality stuff to push the bar and to support the idea that a player built virtual world can be as compelling as prepackaged virtual worlds. now that there are so many players creating high quality content, his question is do we still need this alleged secret linden.

personally, i don't buy that there is a secret linden artist.

Heh well, if there is a secret linden, they should probably un-secret him and get him to help with some of the "Linden" made content..

He's talking about the bricks of gold that LL sends all of the successful content producers, Enabran.

You make it sound like subsidized 'producers' are the rule,. not the exception.

There were a few outsourced/contracted projects. (such as the welcome area.)

Few (I would say none) content producers are regularly paid in by Linden Lab.

Developer Incentive exists, but that does not come from content production, it comes from traffic/dwell. And it is, as Enabran said, peanuts, except for the person on the top of the list.

Most of the content you see in world, that is bought and sold, and is successful, is NOT developed by a 'paid producer'. In my two years here I have never heard of such a thing.

I don't know what the heck he is talking about. LL does have a content team. Ryan is its director, and IIRC he builds stuff. Eric is a texture wizard. Ben scripts. No conspiracy here...

Can't forget Xenon, who built the lovely moth temple, among other things, and Nova, takecarer of SLLM!

Who else is there? :)
