I am looking for the lowest cost solution to bring up about 10 second life user workstations.
I am about CPU / Ram / Video card and lowest cost type of boot device not sure if Linux on a CD, USB drive or a very small disk drive or maybe even just a remote boot onto another hard drive (not sure how often client needs to talk to the drive.)
Does anyone know the minimum CPU , video card specs, ram specs etc that could be used or has anyone put together a really low cost client (or multiple clients)
Thanks

Can you provide a base performance target? Like the FPS you'd like to get on these machines in an average sim? I've gotten SL to run on an 800 mhz laptop with an 8 meg intel extreme graphics card, but let's just say it wasn't a pleasant experience; circles displayed as Hexagons, all textures were blurred and shifting, and I got about 0.8 fps. Or, 1.2 spf. Regards, -Flip

Classroom / demo type environment so reasonable (non frustrating performance would be prefered. Machines will be 100% dedicated to SL though so could be tweaked to disable anything not required.

Just a tip: If you're using Windows, and Second Life is the *only* thing to be run on that PC, I've seen some limited performance improvement by going into task manager, and setting the "Priority" for secondlife.exe to High. (Thanks to Osgeld Barmy for this idea)

heh going for the cheapest bottem line i came up with a 2.26ghz celeron, 512mb of ram and a nvidia fx5200, for not much more you can get a p4 2.26ghz, and a faster video card (which i would recomend) Products Qty Price Ext Price P4M800-COMB35 -- Biostar P4M80-M4 Socket 478 mATX MB w/Celeron D 2.26GHz CPU $81.88 x10
SAM-256DDR2700-N -- Samsung 256MB DDR PC2700 184-Pin DIMM $17.00 x20
HPFX5200-B -- NVidia Geforce FX5200 128MB AGP Video Card w/TV Out $30.00 x10
KG-200 -- 11-Bay ATX Case w/300W Power Supply - Great for P4! $16.88 x10
ST315310AR -- Seagate 15.3GB UDMA/100 7200RPM 2MB IDE HDD $21.00 x10 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subtotal: $1,428.20
that of course comes up to 166.76 USD per unit, not including mouse kb speakers monitor or os. Thats the cleron version, if you can scrape 200 per unit, you can get a 128mb radeion 9600 (or a nvidia for just abit more) and a p4 chip ... which would be better over all. The website i used is a wholesaler, some items are new some are refurbushed, with limited warrentys Some too good to be true deals on this site can be, ie they have a 21 inch viewsonic monitor for (bulk) 42 $ each, factory refurbs, but no warrenty, so you (slim chance) might end up with a funky one in that deal just be shure to read the discriptions, its quite clear whats what source: http://www.evertek.com
