Hi, I'm new (as in I've been wandering around second life for around two weeks) and I really like what I've seen. Its great all the things you can do and make but I am not really sure what to do. I am able to script but I never know what I should make. I can model badly but also I am unsure what to do. There is so much to do but I feel like I am suffering from lack of structure. Is there a remedy? Is there something I should do to give meaning to my second life? Or is Second life just not right for me?
Thanks, Boyo

Surely you can come up with something. Someone needs to make me a Big Wheel. It could be you!

I would recommend sticking with it. Like life, there is no formal overreaching structure to guide us, but also like life, the longer you hang around the more likely you will run into the meaning. At some point you are likely to run into an idea, or a team of people with an idea, or SOMETHING. Then suddenly your second life will have a purpose and it won't see so structureless after all.

Second Life is everything for everyone... we make the world, so it's only limited by our imaginations. At 60K+ users that is a lot of imagination!!! Keep exploring the grid, you'll find something that totally captivates you and then you'll know what to do. It takes most people months to find a niche they really enjoy in SL... but those months or searching and exploring are also fantastic, and something you begin to miss once you fall into your niche. I think it took me about 9 months and one Game Dev competition before I really felt comfortable and carved out the stuff I like to do in SL. But I still had a great time in those 9 months... meeting new people, seeing new things. Helping people script stuff in return for Lindens or putting some USD through *LindeX every once in a while to fund my exploring. * right LindeX, sure that's what I mean. How easy we change history

hmm, the meaning of second life. *computes* *bzzzp* *ping* 84!
Yes coming up with something to make can be hard. But what i allways try to remind me is that any great artist started out learning his skill by mimicking those of a great artist before him. So maybe try to find something that you find interresting, and try to remake it. Use this as a learning experience, and i'm sure that by the time you're done, you have thought up ways to improve it or put it to use in a unexpected way. And remember your goal is not to make something grid shattering, just make what is in your minds eye. Enjoy creating on itself. And if succes follows, that will be just extra rewarding.

According to the CEO of Eve Online, that's the meaning of Eve Online too - apparently used as the seed for the random number generator that created all the planets.

I was going to post 43; because 42 can't be the meaning of both lives, or else nobody would bother with a second one.

You'll want to visit the Ivory Tower of Primitives to work on your building skills. Robin Sojourner's texture tutorial at Benten 18,99 is a great resource as well. There is a sandbox at The Learning Center in Mauve that has a great group of regulars who call themselves the Mauve Mechanics. They're looking to make a float for the Katrina Relief Mardi Gras parade. Perhaps you'll find inspiration and meet other like minded SLers by joining that project.

It is, most assuredly, 23. Don't take my word for it. Ask anyone. They will, however, deny it. That is your first clue.

Being a newbie myself, all I can say is that just like in the First Life, it's all about the journey.
That being said, I'm going through the same thing. I want to get involved, but I don't know how good my building talents will be. Until then, I'm having a blast simply looking around.
Thank you, Margaret, for your information. I'm certainly going to check that out.

I, too, am a newbie. I've been having great fun going to the various events, if that helps any. It takes some skill to sift through the events list because its mostly just sex sex sex and tringo slingo blood21. Some of the dances can be fun if you are outgoing but watching an avatar dance is not much fun unless the conversation is also stimulating (not in that sex way although that can be fun too -- I was more speaking of stimulating as in witty and engaging).
There are things other than the sex, gambling, tringo and dances though. You do have to look to find them. But they are out there and I noticed just yesterday that they are getting more plentiful. Last night there were two live music events at the same time which is so cool.
Also I poured some money into Lindens so I would have money to buy what I wanted when I wanted. I bought land, I bought clothes, I bought a really cute prefab house that had to be resized (thank you Keith!) because tiny does not mean you own a 512 lot but instead means that there are people called tinies in this world. All the life of a newb. My next purchase will be a cool vehicle. Being a newb, LindenX doesn't help much because it doesn't let you purchase much. Ansche Chung will sell you as many Lindens as you want to buy, doesn't overcharge and I've found him/her to be quite reliable. IGE is the suck. Their purchasing process is very painful. SLexchange is nice but you have to find one of their ATMs in game to get your cash which is a pain in the butt. I highly recommend buying Lindens if you have the real life cash to do so.
I also like to explore. Last night I found the great wall, this really cool halloween maze, an observation tower that goes way the hell up in the sky and the future site of Rome. I love travelling around and just marvelling at all the cool stuff people have built.
Also I got a job hosting trivia contests and writing for an in-game newsletter -- both of which are way fun.
The problem I'm having, and I assume this will work itself out after SL isn't so new anymore, is that I'm so busy going to events, meeting people, exploring cool places, and the like that I've been neglecting learning how to build, make clothes and skins, and script. But, like I said, I suspect that will work itself out in time. Also I got a job that will pay me to learn to build but it hasn't started up yet. The classifieds forums is a good place to look for jobs and you said you script -- I noticed two posts in there yesterday from people looking for scripters.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, Boyo Hey Boyo, welcome to Second Life! Everyone has their own reasons for being here. Don't feel like you HAVE to do anything. Sometimes it's fun just to sit back and enjoy what others do. Here's what happened to me... When I first came here I had no idea what to do. I explored a lot. The world was a lot smaller then, but still seemed large at the time. Even then I didn't visit every region. I didn't know how to script and had very basic building and texturing skills. Then something happened that changed everything. I bought a tiny piece of land from Shantilly Lily that proved to be a turning point in my second life. It was in a new area called Rodeo and was just before the first land auctions back in February of 2004. I had a vision of a large forest and began planting trees. Today that area is known as the Forest of Kahruvel
