maybe extreme, but certainly has potential:
1) lindens create a "script lab" that is a separate sim 2) all scripts are written and tested in this "lab" environment 3) upon completion of a script, the author submits the script with summary to lindens 4a) lindens approve the script and release it to the author (uneditable) for public consumption or 4b) lindens deny the script for public consumption outside of the "script lab" sim
knowing how ruthless people can be, i expect some flaming from this concept. but i also know that if something is not done to control the type of abusive behaviour many of us witnessed last night, it will be the demise of this community over the long term.
Do you have a better idea? Post it.

Personally, I'm surprised it took this long to happen. My guess is that they pretty much have this problem mostly licked, but a couple of things went wrong.
It'll be hard to redo this, I think.

That would make scripting such a headache and a drawn out process.

The backlog would be dramatic. It would take far too long to get even the simplest script approved. Not a really workable idea, especially as SL grows. I prefer banning the few idiots who bother to perpetrate a global attack, as well as resource usage throttling, by resident, at the asset server level to prevent a cascade failure like what we saw last night. Sounds like a There idea, honestly. And There is dead.

Knowing the kind of half-wit schlubs who populate the grid, I imagine my post will not be recognized for it's sheer brilliance and keen in-sight... You're stupid.
The demise of this "community" will be the only thing, in the long run, that will save both Second Life and Linden Lab. I welcome any kind of terrorista disruption that impresses upon the Lindens how silly it is to try and build an organic and extensible platform with such a vulnerable, centralized design.

From: Amberina Grant Do you have a better idea? Post it. I do. Wait until LL develops the ability to distribute the software such that we can host our own subgrids connected with gateway (firewall) sims that limit which, and how many, avs and items may enter the region um domain er area or whatever we call the privately hosted subgrids. Then "the world" won't be dependent on a few small points of failure. Philip, Andrew and Cory have all stated emphatically that this is the direction that they are steering SL development. Evidence abounds that this is, in fact, true. So all we have to do is wait. Does two years seem like too long? Five? Ten? /clap

Khamon...that is exactly the type of brainstorming i was hoping this thread would evoke. i don't claim my concept to be any better than the next. but if it is a catalyst for new ways of thinking...so be it.
