Second Life can be an incredibly immersive world, seeing that it is based solely on user created content. However, there is only so much immersion that can happen through a keyboard/mouse control scheme. There are many different ways to control vehicles in real life, such as steering wheels, pedals, handle bars, and sticks, just to name a few. Implementing these control structures in Second Life allows users to get closer to the virtual world by giving them mechanisms they are familiar with in the real world.

Biking is the first of these controls we have decided to implement, because it is so ubiquitous. The bicycle is used around the world for cheap, self-powered transportation, and has embedded itself into many interesting contextual situations. Romantic ideas such as biking through the park or using paddle boats, the thrill of the Tour De France, the metaphor of training wheels, are all based on bicycles. Using the LifeCycle, users will now be able to move themselves from place to place in the Second Life world using a stationary exercise bike.

---

So it's not quite as spiffy as Iron Perth's setup (Iron, you've gotta write that thing up sometime, I loved your implementation), but that's what v1.0 is for, I guess. Definitely need to increase the encoder resolution and put real handlebars on the thing. Still, it's fun to ride through the world.

Have people already made tour guide scripts, i.e. scripts that will set way points from one place to another? I'd like to make walking and biking paths through Second Life, so you could just bike/walk and look around without actually having to worry about turning/navigating.

Next up, treadmills!

Whoa, I want one of those :D
Imagine setting up a whole gym with these... and making games in SL that take advantage of this input!

Well, there's already personal trainers in SL, so we're certainly one step closer... :)

Whoa, this is amazing! However, I seriously doubt my technical ability to integrate my SL with various bits of exercise equipment. I'm sure I could get my (engineer) husband to help me figure it out... but for the average non-techie layperson, is this do-able?

Kudos to you for your innovative thinking!

Very kewl! I love to see external hardware coming implimented in SL!

Have you seen the biofeedback device (the lightstome that comes with the Journey To Wild Divine game) in SL yet? Komuso of the InnerLife Project (external forums / SL Forums ) has implimented an alpha version of the system.

We have been experimenting with different ways to visualize the incoming data. Its a ton of pretty particle fun. :)

Beryl: It depends on the bike you're using, and what kinda of information you can relay from it. My ultimate goal here is to set up a suite of open source programs tools relating to fitness and exercise. Part of that will be a database of how to use various kinds of equipment for tasks like this.

Or you could just throw down $2500US+ on a NexFit

http://www.nexfit.com/

Ghoti: I really, really, reallllllllly want a LifeStone, but it doesn't fit in my current budget of $0. Once I get an extra couple of hundred kickin around, it's the first thing on my list.

Maybe I'll get one for christmas. :)

Kewl :) Yeah, its not exactly cheap at $160 (game plus USB biofeedback device) but its definately a hoot to use.

Personally, I am just an enthusiastic alpha tester (though starting to make my own uses of it in SL with the help of my friend Leena) and do not know anything about the backend that we're using. Komuso is our programmer, and I'm sure he has tons he could say about it... not that I've seen him in world for awhile now. :/

Anywho, drop me a message in world some time if you'd like to see what we're up to. :)

Wish I had $2500US+ for a NexFit.

Beware of potential health hazards.

Future versions of the project will make the Second Life Bike explode and throw the Av 10 sims over if they drop below this speed.
