The 1.9.1 preview is up, with some interesting new stuff, including the flexible flapping prims, and hardware lighting, and other such things.

So if there is nothing new under the SLsun, try the preview grid.

Wow, I had to admit that I had to re-read those release notes, it was rather unbelievable.

This sounds like a pretty exciting upgrade.

tried the new lighting features in the preview, the viewer FPS still drop to <2FPS when all lighting and shadows are on, <6FPS when only near local ligting is on... Still sucks, still unusable.... nice try LL.

The flexible prim feature seems nice, now you can make hair and clothes that moves with the wind. Did not check the effect on FPS, but I'm sure it can't help much.

The more feature they add, the less you can use them... funny.

Notice that shadows and local lighting are now tossed together in the settings menu? I assume shadows are just as broken as Local Lighting. Why do I say this? Well, with fast timers window up I consistently saw Lighting (subsection of World Update) rack up /horrible/ processing times. By horrible, I don't mean having a time up in the hundreds, no, but instead, it consistently hits timings up in the thousands. In fact, during my typical hard locking up when objects and avs are loading, I noticed that Lighting liked to hang around 80k ms, and it even hit 100,518 ms(!). The graph was literally completley full of dark blue.

Even though I'm currently running SL on a measly athlon 2800xp, the timings lighting hits are simply insane at best. Something seems to be really broken, and I assume this is how LL intends to remove these features alltogether. I wouldn't be suprised if shadows are removed in a following update... unless of course, they fix it (It is possible, I guess...).

Edit: The fast timer values were taken in 1.9(not the preview) with just shadows enabled. Local lighting was off. Shadow calculations are tossed into the lighting section.
