When I go to the Second Life Web site, I can see listing of my friends online. However, it's often inconvenient or impossible to log in to SL at that time, even though I may want to pass a message along to one of my friends. Is it possible to use e-mail to send a message to an online friend's IM? I know if I'm offline, their IM messages to me show up in my e-mail, and I can respond to those e-mails, which will be delivered to the friend's IM. I wish it were possible to just click on the friend's name in the online list and drop them an e-mail, but it's not.

Hi Daft,

I don't think it is possible to initiate a conversation this way. However, if you have your own SL settings set to email you IMs when you are offline and your friend sends an IM to you, you will receive it in your email and you can reply and carry on a conversation this way. Your friend will be assigned a temporary unique email address that corresponds with his/her SL key. This email address will become defunt after a certain amount of time, though - hopefully someone else here can fill in that bit of info. I think it is 24 hours, but I seem to recall using one a couple of days later in the past.

Cheers!

Actually, yes. There is a period of time in which you can email the IM source and have it show up in the game as an IM. It's kinda hit or miss, but it can be done.

Use reply to make it work.

There is an Email-2-IM device you can buy for L$25 from Max Case (I think that is his name), it allows you to initiate emails to friends in SL, but you have to set up the friends name and key number in your Email-2-IM cube before it will work.

Essentially you send an Email to the cube with your friends name in the subject and the cube forwards the email as an IM to your friend. Works great when you need to get a message to some one but can't easily log on.

Arch, how do you retrieve your friend's key? Is this something you can access in-world, or does the friend have to give it to you?

Sorry, I'm unfamiliar with the term "cube." Is this an object that will be in my avatar's inventory? This sounds like EXACTLY what I need. What is the term "key number?" Does each resident have a key number? Or is this just a number I assign to each friend in the list, which must be unique?
