Hello Everyone. I am working on a research project in Visual Anthropology for the department of anthropology at San Francisco State University. For a short-term project (2-3 weeks) I am looking to interview some SL residents. I am not looking for anyone or anything specific. Initially I would just like to start with a greeter to get a better sense of the space and activities that take place in SL. I will most likely post one survey but most of what I am doing is through observation and direct communication.

Just recently I created an avatar and completed the Orientation Island simulation. I feel comfortable with the basic navigation items but I am still a newcomer. Actually, I forgot to arrange for a greeter or instructor during registration so if anyone is interested please let me know. I also need to get better clothes?

Anyway. This is my first thread on this topic. Hopefully people are interested in the project and will respond. If anyone wants to contact me through email you can send your message to stojanik@sfsu.edu. Thanks

Hi Nik,

Sounds cool!

You'll need to follow the instructions on our policy page on "Research Ethics"

http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=Research+Ethics+in+Second+Life

Please read that and contact us as described on the page so we can make sure everything is handled properly.

Thanks!

Hi Nik,

Welcome to SecondLife!

Just so you don't get in trouble, you might want to read
THIS:

From: someone

Research Ethics

As digital worlds like Second Life become more visible to the public, academics, researchers, and writers have shown an increased interest in studying the online behaviors and interactions of the people involved. The focus of their interest varies, but generally they want to observe, analyze, and often write about their observations. Sometimes we’re aware of these projects, but often these individuals find Second Life on their own without taking the important step of alerting Linden Lab of their intentions.

While most of these individuals follow the ethics guidelines of their professions and obtain informed consent from any individual they interview, that isn’t always the case. Additionally, there have been instances where private individual communications have been published without consent, and without anonymity, in public forums. It’s our fundamental belief that this type of behavior erodes trust and threatens the privacy of Second Life residents.

Second Life exists for its members. While we don’t discourage research or classroom study, it is our policy that no one may use Second Life or its forums for their own purposes without the explicit consent of Linden Lab.

If you are engaged in a classroom or research project, or plan to write about the Second Life community as part of your project you must contact Linden Lab via email at education@lindenlab.com. Please send a detailed proposal for us to review. If we feel you have a valid project, we will alert the community to your proposal. After we hear from the members, we’ll make a final decision on whether/when you can begin. You will be asked to sign an agreement that you will adhere to our mutually agreed-on conditions of your project.

Members of the press can write generally about Second Life without following this process. However, if you plan to interview any Second Life residents please contact our Marketing Department. Contact information is available at http://www.lindenlab.com/press_0.php.

The Association of Internet Researchers is in the process of forming a task force to draft international guidelines for researchers who want to conduct research on the Internet. If you'd like to learn more, please visit their website at http://aoir.org/.

Thanks!

Sounds extremely interesting.

If you're looking for someone to interview, hit me up in-world -- I've been around for over 2 years, I've seen a lot. :P

Thanks for the quick replies and the heads up on the research policy. I still have to take care of some 'clerical' things with LL so I won't get too far into the interviews until mid next week. Until then I will probably just explore and check things out. I have too be out of town this weekend so I won't log-in until Sunday. If I don't see any of you then I will catch up with you next week.

Can I just do a search of you names to find your locations in-world?

Bye and talk to you soon.

stuff like the research ethics rules needs to be more visible.

I'm a psychology student, and may have inadverdently done a case study based on SL, and I never even knew that LL had such a policy.

Is it just me, or does this sound a little bit.... overbearing?

No offense indended, Lindens, but people are free to do practically anything they want in SL... except scholarly research?

There is history to this.

I am glad LL has a policy for scholars in Second Life, since we don't want to be studied like ants in an ant farm. Any reputable scholar can follow these rules without much difficulty. There IS a history to the whole thing, and LL has shown good sense in how they handled it.
