Yes, without billing information required then certainly more underage hoodlums will logon. That will be exciting. Mayhem and griefing is always exciting, as is that question you'll always have to ask yourself .... "Oh crap, please please please, she's over 18 ... isn't she?"

How else do you think they'd get to their 1 million mark?

And the fact that they also "sneaked in" the removal of the L$250 starting money.
This matters, folks. There's a lovely display of L$1 avatars at NCI for new people to pick up. Until they've taken out the credit card, they now can't do that. They can't even upload a single texture. (Barring camping or trees, of course, but they're already mostly picked dry.) |

Yes, I definitely noticed that. I'm keeping track. All that's left now, I believe, are: (1) The starting pay for premiums, (2) the bonus for premiums who get others to go premium (we still have that, don't we?), (3) the stipend for premiums, (4) the stipend for old basics, and (5) the pay for conducting educational classes. As far as this new plan for basic memberships goes, I am thinking we will get a WHOLE lot of new people (without credit cards, maybe), with absolutely ZERO money and absolutely NOTHING to do . . . . . . which is your standard recipe for griefers. A recipe that might even turn your average non-griefer into a griefer (or at least a nuisance), just to have something to do. coco _____________________

I hate having to register for stuff!. Some days it feels like you can't do a damn thing on the net without having to tell some site about your life story and intimate details.
Registration Form Name: Address: Favorite colour: Have you ever killed somebody?: Penis Length: Last time you ate snot?: What are you looking at? Nice day, isn't it?: Do you want a thump in the head?: Next page: Terms and agreement blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah bla h blah blah blah Next page: Thank you, you have now registered to move your mouse pointer. ARRrrrRRrrRGH!!!! I say they should let people connect whenever they want to. But maybe we need better anti-asshole measures putting in place first. Afterall, we don't have to register to use the internet. Although it would be so annoying if people could push us around while we was browsing a website. * Takes deep breaths * |

This idea seems to be yet another classic example of LL doing something that will have a huge adverse affect on the community because of a perceived need to attend to an "economic" problem.
![]() Money is in the drivers seat. The effects of these changes on the people or the communities ... Well who gives a sh*t about that? ![]() Even if it causes waves of greifers, grid attacks, whatever. As long as that virtual dress costs $0.32 US instead of $0.45 (that's the important thing)! _____________________

Are there any other safeguards for age verification out there?

Well, I haven't seen the 'new' form yet. What's up as of right now is still the old one.
I don't see how this can work, as far as the age verification goes. Any on-line age verification systems I am aware of ALL use the posession of some sort of credit card as their proof. And how will they tell a "first time free" account from any other alt request? E-mail address? I can generate a thousand of them in a heartbeat, all of which will work. IP Address? MAC Address if the network card? Both easily averted and/or shielded and/or constantly changing due to ISP access, firewalls and home routers. I have to agree that I fear this is just going to open the floodgates to griefers who will use the new alts as completely disposable accounts, and to underage twits who 'wanna swim in the adult pool'. In all fairness, yes, a lot of people will get a free account, look around a bit, and decide it's worth staying and paying for. At least worth purchasing some Lindens for. But to do that, they still have to provide a credit card or Paypal somewhere, which blows away the 'get the ones who don't want to give out credit card info' argument. _____________________

You know, you'd think they'd change the confirmation email you get, how out of date is this:
You’ve registered for a Second Life Premium Account with the account name "******** *******" and you now have unlimited access to Second Life - its building and scripting tools, events, and land auctions. Your Premium Second Life Account benefits include a L$1000 bonus, a higher weekly allowance and the ability to own land on which you can build, entertain and live. If you haven't yet done so, be sure to download and install the Second Life client software. You can always download the latest version on our website at http://secondlife.com/download. Your account begins with a free 7-day trial, during which your Premium benefits are not yet active. In order to enjoy your Premium account benefits immediately, or to cancel if you decide you don't want to join, change your account status at http://secondlife.com/account. At the end of this trial period, if you choose not to cancel, you will be charged $9.95 for the Basic Plan you signed up for at registration. If you cancel before your trial expires, you will not be billed. And yes, the new sign-ups page is available and I just got that back in response to opening an account. Surely they should have changed that by now - I mean, it's even out of date for how it was before this change. PS> Hold on, maybe this is correct and these accounts are only a 7-day trial? Never saw that mentioned elsewhere. _____________________

I noticed that, too, and don't like it. Though I don't know a way around it if LL wants to allow basic accounts without a credit card. Still, it makes me want to get a money tree or something else to provide funds to newbies. _____________________
