I've changed the title since I first posted this, since my new quest is to build a list of SL-friendly hotels world-wide. If you know of such a hotel, post it to this list or send me an IM in-world. I also want to track hotels that are not friendly to SL.

Based on the info I received from the original posting I have made reservations at a "friendly" hotel in London.

I'm traveling to London in a couple of weeks and don't want to be off-world despite being in a hotel with an internet connection.

So, if you have recently stayed in a decent London hotel and you were able to run Second Life from your room, please let me know! On the other side, if you stayed somewhere and couldn't run it, that would be good to know as well.

Since I travel a lot, I am going to start collecting this data in the course of my visits. Post your own info as followups and I will re-summarize from time to time.

So far I have the following list of good and bad hotels:

=================================================

Works
  1. Palo Alto, CA, USA - Dinah's Garden Court - 2006/8
  2. Oxford, UK - Macdonald Eastgate Townhouse - 2006/7
  3. London, UK - Park Lane Hilton
  4. London, UK - Sanderson
  5. London, UK - Langhams
  6. London, UK - Hilton Trafalgar Square
  7. London, UK - Ritz

Doesn't Work
  1. London, UK - Thistle Royal Horseguards - 2006/7 - Internet provided by Intertouch

I can't help you with London hotels. The ones I have been in have been completely clueless about Net access.

What I can tell you is that the Starbucks in Leicester Square is a good bet if you can't find a decent hotel connection. They are open late for a UK place, (Everything there closes so early!), there are plugins for laptops (near the front entrance on the freestanding walls to the left and right and in the last room in the back right near the bathrooms), and they are decent about leaving you alone. It is loud and, of course, a wireless connection, etc., so it's not at all ideal, but I found nothing better so far.

You can buy access on a daily/weekly/monthly plan - and that works for any Starbucks or any of their partners. It's not cheap, but nothing in the UK is. SL does run tolerably well, although I wouldn't try complex building. The connection does drop sometimes, but I never had any problems reconnecting.

Sorry, I know this is not quite what you were asking for, but I was desperate to get inworld last time I was there, and this saved my sanity.

I'll be tracking Second Life compatible hotels world-wide at my new page. Post updates in this thread or send me an in-world IM.

(Everything there closes so early

theres a ccommon misconseption right there, being a londoner i have to inform ye that your statement is wrong and missleading.
not everything closes so early in london, i can name a lot of shops that remain open until quite late and a lot of clubs that dont shut until the sun comes up in the morning :p

End of Quoted section

as for hotel internet, just check the price and what you get as some of these place do like to over charge for nothing so check and double check, if all else fails it is seemingly that half of london is a wireless hotspot now so you could try the wireless route.

Indeed, I first wanted to find a good hotel in London, but now I've expanded my horizons and want to track them world-wide.
