In the future, when SL is decentralized and many "grids" exist, wouldn't it be awesome if every star in the SL night sky represented a different grid in the SL universe? Imagine looking up at those stars and knowing that you were looking at the entire SL universe. Grids (stars) that were farther away from the one you were currently inhabiting would appear as dimmer stars. Resting your mouse on a particular star would pop up a small text with the name of that grid and it's current number of inhabitants. If we had a system like that, we could even have SL space travel between stars. Sigh.

Another cool thing might be being able to pay $10 to LL or something, to get a star named after you with your name when you hovered on it.

Kind of reminds me of that Powers of Ten video. Though in the future, the amount of servers needed for a space-wide grid would probably take up the entire city. Its not called San Francisco anymore, it's Lindentopia. Celebrating it's 5 millionth resident with a daily $ spending of a trillion dollars. Now we just need microscopic avatars, and supergiant avatars.

Linden Lab has said that they would like to allow anyone to run a server or servers. We could have a whole "universe" of grids, hosted all over the world. When a new server went online, it would use P2P to propogate its existence to the rest of the SL universe. Like light from real stars, info about a new grid would take a while to reach other stars in the universe - hopefully not CENTURIES like in RL. Imagine a galactic SL economy. And space battles.

Personally, I'm waiting for my SL neural implant. Then when I'm near death, my head can be pickled in a jar like on Futurama, (neural implant intact), and I can roam the grid(s) for all eternity

I'd like to just be able to barrel roll in a starship, and lose track of which way is up!

Taking care of all the heads in jars and making sure that the guard dogs don't lick leaking jars is going to cost money. Guess they will put us to work in the grid somewhere somehow.

Distributed servers? Space travel? Space sims? Oh yes! Count me in! As a budding 'World Builder' I think it's about time to start up the Slartibartfast fan group.

Hmm... how would space travel happen, though? Star Wars "from and to anywhere other than inside a gravity well" type hyperspace drive, "jump" drive for travel between specific points like in Wing Commander, or something else (Niven's slowboats, perhaps)? Being a long-time Wing Commander fan, I think it's probably not too hard to guess which way I would prefer. (And from a practical viewpoint, a server for the space around each grid's "world", with jumps in between, would make for an easier load than having all of the intervening space available for exploring.)
