Hello everyone! Guess this is a silly newbie question which probably has been asked a thousand times before. Thing is, I want to change my name, but I was told the only way to do that would be to create a new profile.

Alright, but if I created a new profile, will the old one remain? Will I be able to exchange appearence and measurements from my old avatar to the new one? If so, how does one exactly do this?

Had to ask, otherwise maybe I would do something stupid.

Specifically, you're not just creating a "new profile", you'd be making a whole new Resident account from http://secondlife.com/join

and good news is YESSS the old one will remain! COPY AND PASTE! COPY AND PASTE! And if applicable, any YES-TRANSFER schtuff you have, you can send over via profile inventory drop—just open up the profile of your new account while logged onto your current one and look for that bar near the bottom where it tells you to drag-and-drop stuff. You'll have both accounts in existence at the same time unless you decide to cancel one.

Correct... each additional Basic account incurs a one time $9.95 charge... so basically, it costs US$9.95 to change your name.

Okay, thanks everyone for welcoming me. Then I only have to consider whether a new name is worth 10$... maybe I think it is. Too vain. :D

The upshot of having your original "alt", though, is you do need three people to start a group. This way, you've already got one of the people you need. :D

Got my new Resident Account now! :P

Hm, it sounded easy at first but really I don't get you at all. Copy and paste? How? There are no separate files for different characters when you open the Second Life folders.

Neither do I see any way of transfering stuff from one resident of mine to another when logged into the game (only one can be logged in at any given time, obviously). The only thing that happens when you press "profile" is a line saying "drop inventory item here", but it's no button and you can't press it, nor can inventory things be dragged-and-dropped on here... :?

Maybe it would help with a few more details. I'm obviously misunderstanding everything...

Ditto! :D

Considering that I love Austrian chocolate cake, I thought the second name pretty appropriate at firts, but actually it's kind of hard to say the entire name in one go.

Okeydoke... what I mean by "COPY AND PASTE" was in reference to things such as your profile, if you have text or other things you'd like to transfer from one account to another, without retyping.

But let's focus on the problem you're having...

YES! That bar that says "Drop Inventory Item Here"—do exactly what that says. For example:
  1. open up your Inventory window
  2. open the profile you want to transfer schtuff to
  3. lay them side by side so you can see both
  4. click on any object in your inventory with the profile window still open, and while holding down the left mouse button, drag it onto that bar (or anywhere on the profile will actually work, the "drop inventory item here" is just a guide to help you out)
  5. the cursor icon should change to indicate you can send it. let go of the mouse button

Wait a few moments.

It'll say something in a little blue message box like "User is offline, inventory has been saved". If so, it prolly worked! (The exception to this is: you can't send stuff that's marked (no transfer). It'll give you a NO symbol in that case anyway, easy to tell.)

It's perhaps EASIEST to do it first with a fully permissive object (mod, copy, and paste) to make sure you have the hang of things. You might have some freebie items you can do this with. A good way is also to test with friends... if you have anything you want to attempt sending me (Torley Torgeson), go ahead and I'll let you know if I received it.

Once the stuff is sent over, you can then log off "Monique Sacherforte", log on your new Resident account, and check your inventory to confirm the things are there. If you don't see them immediately, give it some time and use Inventory Search too, it's very handy for things like this.

Best of hope! :)

However, if what you're trying to give to your new person is a non transfer item, nothing will happen. It won't give you a message, it'll just refuse to work really.

You can check, usually the item in your inventory will have right there "no transfer", in parantheses after the item.
