Hello. I'm quite new to SL (started this week). Sometimes when I teleport my character is somehow changed into a female. I have to go to appearance and exit to fix it. My gender says female there, but I don't change it nor save when I exit appearance. Any idea what causes this?

This is an ancient bug and lag related. I've never known it to take an appearence reload to fix it, but... all avatars are born female in SL. Sometimes, if the load is heavy, it takes a while to shake off the Ruth possession.

All you need to do to fix it is, right click yourself and select appearance, when the appearance window opens, click close, DO NOT SAVE! When you turn around, you should have your old AV back before you have the sex change!
