I'm just now getting started in Second Life after reading a couple of articles about it. I find it interesting that people have businesses in SL that leak over into real life. I was interested in finding out how to get started off in it? Are there any helpful articles/databases?

I would:

1. visit the Ivory tower of Primitives to learn how to build
2. learn how to use photoshop if you'd like to make and sell clothes
3. go to the second life wiki if you want to learn how to script

Take some time to fly around and explore first. that way you can get an idea of what sort of things are possible and what appeals to you

Thank You. Do you have a location of the Ivory Tower? I was there a few days ago but I forgot where it is.

It's in a sim called Natoma. You can't miss it, it's about the only thing in the entire sim. You can also hit the search button on your toolbar and enter "ivory tower of primitives" in the search box.

Where to get help:

Press F1 on your keyboard. This brings up the help pages..lots of good info there.

Use Live Help to get answers from volunteers. In the top toolbar go to HELP then LIVE HELP.

A few places to check out for fun: (just some ones i like off the top of my head)

sim names

Bora Bora
Sanctum Sanctorium
Miramare
Tableau (okay shameless plug)
Taco

Have fun!

There are many different types of business you can get into in SL. As Ingrid says, take some time to see whats available to you here. You at least want to find something that you enjoy doing. Evaluate your skills for building, scripting, computer art, or a number of other possibilities available to you to see what you like and/or can do well.

Most of the residents of SL do not run a business. You don't have to run a business to enjoy SL. I didn't for my first 8 months in SL. So take your time and ideas will come to you.

Well, I kinda figured you don't HAVE to open a business or anything like that, it's just I always wanted to be my own boss and I hope to be able to fund the tuition for film school. As far as I can tell, I enjoy SL and hope to really get into the community.

I wouldn't make any serious financial decisions based on earning potential in SL, not to the level of tuition fees. However, you can likely make a bit of extra cash.

Yeah, saying "help with the tutition fees" probably would have been a better way to say it. Sorry.
