I have been here for ages and never used the "forum buddies" thing because I am friendless and mean. Actually, the truth is that I have never clicked on "add this person to your buddy list" because the way it's written it kind of implies that you are best friends or kissing cousins rather than just having an interest in the other persons posts. I also worry about whether or not there is any notification involved. For instance, if I add someone to my "buddy list", does the other person get some lame embarrasing email, like ... "Dianne Mechanique" wants to be your buddy"?? Yuck! What exactly *is* a buddy anyway? and why the heck would I want one? Does the other person have to consider *me* their "buddy" for it to be accepted? I have been here for half a year and I have always been afraid of clicking that button. So what would happen if I did?

I have about 5 people on my Buddies list, and I've never noticed any benefit from it. I don't think they're notified, it just puts a little + next to their name on the user list. If it actually serves a purpose, I've overlooked it.

I've never done it either, Dianne. If you want to experiment you can add me as a buddy and I'll report if I get any notification. Then you can take me OFF and I'll report if I get a notice saying, "Dianne Mechanique has decided you aren't buddy materia;."

Actually. hehe.. if you have someone as your Buddy on the forums, and you want to send them a PM out of the blue. You can go to you Buddy list, see their full name, and copy and past their name into the "Recipient Username(s):" section of the PM. Then you don't have to track down a forum post of theirs to send a message though it.

I was thinking that it was about following someone elses postings rather than having to search for them, but sometimes I want to follow postings of people I dont necessarily like. So I was thinking that sending them a gushy message about "being my buddy" might not be the way to go. Me tinks I'm gonna add some buddies and see what happens.... Starting with you!

If you spell it wrong, it will tell you. You can also pull down the Quick Links menu, click Open Buddy List and check a few boxes and hit PM Users. The Open Buddy List also gives a quick look at who is on/offline.
