Many groups have open registration. If you search groups in world there should be a join option somewhere. Unfortunately I am not inworld right now.
You will find as you do different things in SL you may be invited to join groups that are centered around those activities.

The join button is located under the group picture now
If there is no join button, you can't join, simple as that ^^ (Well, you can if the owner lets you )
