Hello! I'm Fritz Linden and I'm the new Concierge - Technical
Specialist. I just wanted to give you an update on the issue where sims
have been crashing. First, please know that this is a priority issue
for us. We're aware about how frustrating it can be and we've got a
bunch of people working on locating the cause. Unfortunately, "locating
the cause" is currently what we're doing. Although they've nailed down
the variations that are affecting different people, the root cause for
the crashes is still not apparent. However, we expect the cause to
found shortly, and then it'll just be a matter of fixing where the error
is happening.

I'll be sending out periodic emails about the issue, with updates as
they become useful. If you find that you have other problems that seem
to be related, please make sure to submit them, as they can help us
track down the culprit.

Curious...how many people have gotten this email and are struggling with this?

I've spoken to Fritz on the phone. He seems a nice guy but a little out of the loop.

I got a similar email yesterday. It is maddening when you build up a sim specifically for "low lag" and people come there and proclaim "lag" when its something totally beyond a users control-ie server instability with the image time and time dilation. Its not hard to see it when it happens though, people and objects will refuse to rez and you get those time dilation sinks that keep people from doing what they want to do, like build or walk across the room.

I received the e-mail as well Stroker. One of two islands seemed to be more prone to this issue despite being under development and therefore not having a lot of activity or objects. I had to deal with one unknown roll-back last week that was only noticed by one of three build teams, and of course only after the others had continued work meaning we couldn't explore the issue for an alternate restore.

Hmmm, I had a lot of island sim crashes on Sunday - AND reported it, AND reported a way of provoking the crashes by using an Estate Tools function - at which point I was told it was because my 4 AV/<2000 object/<10ms script time sim was 'overloaded'.

Needless to say I haven't received that eMail...

The email I recieved was similar but different. I had been in contact with Cyn and several other Lindens about the random and vicious swings private islands are seeing in sim FPS and Time Dilation, and received:

From: someone
Hi there,

As many concierge customers will already be aware, we currently have a
particularly nasty bug that is affecting some islands/estates. This
problem began after a recent update that included changes to the
backend infrstructure One of our developers, Steve, comments..

"Regarding the current bug: So, let me start off by assuring you
that your concerns are our top priority right now. Several recent
changes that we had to make in order to grow and improve Second Life
have contributed to reduced simulator performance in non-obvious ways,
and we appreciate your patience while we work through these. -Steve"

So what are the symptoms..
The symptoms vary but what we are most often seeing is that 'Time
Dilation' will dip, sometimes sharply whilst at the same time 'Images
Time' will spike, often very high indeed. Usually this will last a
couple of seconds, and repeat itself at fairly regular intervals. It
does not seem to be related to how busy a region is.

During our Friday company meeting, this issue was highlighted as our
top priority by Philip himself. Several developers are working on it
as there are likely to be several aspects to the problem.

We are hoping to have a fix, not in this coming update, but the update
after that. We know this is frustrating, and want nothing more than to
see it solved ourselves.

One additional comment from Steve..

"Regarding scripts on a region: We do know that our scripting system
is not currently capable of running > 6000 scripts and maintain good
performance. This not a built in limitation, just an observed point at
which performance typically degrades. It is not the only factor; there
are many many more. It is merely the most significant factor. We are
currently working on a tool to help you identify the scripts running
on your sim. It is a very high priority task, but we also have a lot
of other high priority items in the queue, so that feature will not
make it out this release. I do however expect it to make it out in the
following release. -Steve"

If more news comes through, we will post it or email it once more.
Thank you all for your continued patience.

Concierge Team

I expect this is related to the frequent crashes issue which my sim has also been experiencing.

Oh, and as to the script runtime excuse...my sim is nowhere near close to maximum script usage. Never has been. Its a very new sim and new build and the crashes occur with and without customers in the sim. This is not due to overloaded script usage.

this is EXACTLY what we are experiencing. inadvertant spikes until eventually the sim fails and reboots, often with loss of content. This is a SERIOUS issue...why is nothing being said about it? Public Relations? Personally, I am withholding any future sim purchases until this is resolved. I can see Clubside's scenario affecting my buildouts.

Prioritizing is all fine and well...How about an update on the progress LL?? hmmmmm!!

E-Mail...

I too recieved the same exact e-mail that, Zoe Llewelyn had gotten. In fact I can almost say it came at about almost close of business last night for LL. Not that that matters. I just find that a bit funny to note and know myself. I really hate losing objects too. The good thing about that though for me is it has only been ones so far that are copyable. So not a big deal really. It is still however a pain in my rear to have to put new ones out every time I can finally log back in after my sim crashes. I really REALLY hope they fix this bug because it's very VERY freaking annoying!

This is what caused so many problems at the SLCC sims over the weekend as well - it only seems to affect estates, and I *think* today's patch addresses it. This is the primary reason we encouraged people to open up the stream in a separate instance of the Quicktime Player as well, so the stream could continue uninterupted if a sim went down.

Regards,

-Flip

According to the email they sent out to me and others just last night, the fix for this will not be in until at least the NEXT update.

Yep, I think it's not in todays update. But HOPEFULLY it as it said. THE NEXT ONE!? I know thats a wait but one I truely hope worth waiting for before we all lose things we don't or can't afford to lose.
