He may not have meant another SL artist.

Some texture programs do encourage you to use their presets. Genetica, for example, actually starts up on the assumption you're going to modify a built-in texture (you have to go outside the usual front end to create one from scratch). So they may have referred to that./

No, he asked " does the original creator get a cut? " and I advised him to use royalty free images to work with or pay for a subscription as I do for high res photos... he wouldnt be asking if the original creator got a cut unless he was using another 'person' and by that I mean in SL work. HOw could I pay a cut to a software program or some-one even outside of SL? He clearly meant his intention was to use SL textures and mod them for resale.
I dont think he was being malicious I just dont think he knew any better and said
" I think the original creator would be happy enough if they got a cut too "

To which I replied " you need their permission "

My point is not to attack this person but to outline the massive misunderstanding.

I own Texture Maker and DAZ and Poser I am well aware of presets this wasnt what he had in mind.

Are you sure he wasn't just asking whether, if he put a texture on a wall and sold that wall, the original creator wouldn't get a cut?

I had believed that there was a standard to which an image's originality could be measured. Something to the tune of the image being required to have been altered at least 60 or 75 percent to be considered new content. However, I've been unable to find any information about this after a few minutes of searching, it may be a made up rule. –I'll try to find out more!

Yes I was told that too by the owner of Tiledtextures.com whos also in SL ( Toob ) I couldnt find anything but the amount of info to be found is huge!

Best rule of thumb if in doubt ask the creator?

Ouch :( On a side note any texture I make you can use as long as you give credit, Lily, if it makes you feel any better. I'm working on making good textures, at any rate. Mostly come up with splashes and globs so far. :( I'll have to upload some

Good for an art piece or 'painter gone wild wall' though.
