On the main SL site this announcement in grid status: From: someone The Second Life login is currently restricted to Lindens only. We expect to return service to all residents shortly.
For additional details about system upgrades, maintenance, outages, or other known problems please read the Second Life Blog.
So.. I go to the blog to see what it says on further details about it: From: someone Hello All,
We have just updated to Second Life 1.12 which will contain a number of significant changes and improvements to the system. The full release notes are included at the bottom of this message. Of special note in this release are:
*** Blah blah blah... my point is there is nothing about the outage. BUT I come to the forums and find posts about it. I can watch the forum and expect a update on it faster then the linden site and most certainly faster then the blog that does not even mention it. My observation? The forum is more up to date and informative then the blog on this outage. Is this what we can expect when the forums make way for the blog? I sure hope not. EDIT: Now they posted on the blog about it. About 20 mins after it happened. Better late then never so kudos.

I edited the bottom of the message at the moment it updated to show a problem. That was about 12:24. The point is the blog was pretty far behind the info I was getting on the forum. If they are going to take the forum away and claim the blog will be even better for this stuff they need to step up to the challenge and prove it. The blog was not utilized as they said it would be in this case for the up to the minute stuff.

Yes true. But they used to do that in the answer area on the board before they started concentrating on the blog. Now the answer section here gets updated about once a day or so. Here I get the updates from residents along with new issues to look out for. No where on the blog am I warned about Will Smith cubes lol.
Residents are a great wealth of info.. that is going to be missing in a central area when this goes away. I hear about things faster from the residents then from the Lindens. Even in this case of the grid being shut down again.

From: Nimil Blackflag well that's why they have second party forums Yep, and I am a fan of second party forums.. one in particular as you know hehe. But I will miss the centralized location. Soon it will be blog and forum jumping to keep up. Now I can find it all right here. Yeah, I am lazy like that.

While the directed interest forums are of a good degree of value, the general forum(s) are a wealth of misinformation, innuendo, calumny, post-napping, personal diatribe and self-gratification. Oh yeah and humor - most of the time - whether intended or not. *GRIN*

From: Tren Neva Where will we find people to tell us SL is down when we log in and find that SL is down?! Or: Where will we find people to see if it is down for all of us or a problem on my end? Or where will we find out if lots of people are experiencing the same bug I am when the blog does not acknowledge it? We all know how quick LL is to admit a bug is happening all over and not just us needing to clear cache and cookies, don't we?

You know that SL goes under updates/mant every wednesday afternoon, and often takes a few hours if it is a major update. It has been announced that SL is currently being updated. Your first reaction shouldn't me "My internet is broken!".

Your first reaction shouldn't me "My internet is broken!". Tren, I think I am gonna have to break this down here. You seem to be missing the point while you are quick to pick out a sentence or two and claim I should find common sense. My point is that I prefer this forum. I find info faster here then on blogs and third party websites. I think it is a big mistake to move away from them especialy if the blogs are not going to be updated as fast as a centralized location as these forums are. Notice I used a few "I's" there? OK, that is because "I" feel that way. Also as long as "I" am spending 70 bucks or so a month here "I" will expect to have "my" voice heard and "my" observations read where "I" can do so. Now if "You" think the forums leaving and the blogs being made the focal point are a good idea then good on "you". If "you" are spending money here every month then "you" also should feel that "you" can voice "your" observations and opinions. But "you" saying "I" need common sense is pretty funny in light of the fact that "you" miss the big picture and concentrate on small details and try to flame someone with them. But thank "you" for your input on my thread. "You" did have the right to post your thoughts here in this forum and that will not be available in this way soon. I am just very surprised "you" are still here trying to stir up a reaction when the blogs are around for "you" to go to.

Forums are not good for news distribution. I think that the Lindens are doing a good job answering questions from the blog fairly quickly. Most devs don't want to take time to go to the forums, wait for them to load, and then post and trawl General for feedback, they have bugs to fix.
