Just reading some of the post about this being "just a game". I was wondering. When you play do you just star blankly at the screen doing whatever it is you do in sl without much thought or emotion . Or do you FEEL some real human emotions? I KNOW I'm just asking for some smart a*s answers lol but I am really curious. So, how do you feel in rl as you participate in sl.

Pretty much drunk. Ventrillo and yahoo voice makes the event even more surreal.

Careful of that.. you might wind up with some very horrible, "I was drunk soooooo..." stories when you wake up ;)

Nah, I play with emotions, until I get bored of them and go looking for some proper silly putty to play with. (Forgive me, I'm running on allergy meds, thus am not sane at the moment.)

Do I feel anything as I go through SL? Depends on what I'm doing. If I'm building, ooooohhhhhhh the frustration levels. If I'm just dancing around, I might be having fun or just bored. I'm usually quiet, since large groups are more fun to listen to than talk in;)

Yeah, beware of drunk typing.

And stuff. :o

I've regretted being a bit too honest before.

Oh it's a blast except for the worsening of the typos! Oh my... sometimes notecards are a bad thing...

I'm still a noob and thus my naivety, but I find myself becoming very much a part of the game. I also twist in my seat when I am trying to avoid tacklers while playing a football game and I have been know to accuse the game of cheating to overcome my "superior" fighting ability. So I can certainly find myself emotionally involved in a game.

LOL this might just be true. I already say things and think "omg, did I just say THAT?!?", I could just imagine the things I may share when drinking..... hummmm :D

Edit: Share, as in the things I SAY, thought I should clarify ;)

Very much so for me, I know I'm interfacing with RL people. I don't really play SL as a game, rather, as a new way to socialize.
The first time I approached an SL female on a dance floor, my RL heart was pounding like crazy - shades of high school - *grin*

I feel emotions, usually humor, because I play SL to have a good time and play around and get creative. It's still just a game to me, though. My avatar is not "me," I don't have "a character" or anything.

Start treating SL like it is actually an important extension of your life, and you are setting yourself up for great emotional harm, IMHO.

(edit: Example: Treating your SL house like your real house. I have met lots of people that feel that way. I realize that people put a lot of effort and money and creativity into their virtual homes, but try to keep some perspective here.)

Well, jeez, I hope so, I'm interacting with real human beings, not npcs.

Or... at least I thought you were all real human beings.

There isn't anything I do that isn't invested with some emotion, even if it's amusement, frustration, pleasure, annoyance, boredom, satisfaction about any of the things I do or observe in SL or any other "game" really.

Pretty much drunk.
This is frequent for me, too. Otherwise I am often too shy to do much socializing or even performing. :)

When I play the game of real life, I'm usually happy, excited, sometimes overwhelmed.

When I play the game of secondlife, I'm usually frustrated, bored, and have a heightened sense of dorkism

And people playing WoW or other online games don't have real emotions because they're just playing a game? :)

(AW, @%(&#)@$*#)$ I got FRAG'D by that @#(%&#)$ CAMPER!)

*ahem*

Our time, thoughts, emotions, and ideas, whether shoved through a phone or through a computer or through thin air as we face someone in RL. It's all real.

The distinction to me is whether or not the consequences of those (thoughts/emotions/ideas/time/etc) have any lasting importance on my life or not.

While you could say that "It's all inside SL you can't take any of it with you therefore it's not real"... I would say that making money or spending money in SL does touch on reality quite directly.

Does it make any difference if you made a close friend in a game, or a platform, in a bar or at a church? If they become part of your life that's real.

You can't take emotions off like a pair of shoes. Okay, I can't. I have to think that people so in control of their emotions as to be able to turn them off conditionally approach all of their life that way and are...not what I prefer to be like.

I Fell in Love On Line (TSO actually) and the affair carried on for Four years. I Laughed, I Felt warm anticipation, I Cried, I worried, I got Jealous.
Yes, I felt real emotions in Spades.
And,, I wouldn't trade a Moment of it for anything.

SL isn't a game, REAL emotions are at work even though some people still insist on treating it all as a game.
RL isn't a game Either, and as anyone can tell you, there are people There as well who Insist on treating it all as a game.

You maye see Just an Avatar on the screen, but remember, there is a Real Human being behind it somewhere, and in remembering that, don't do anything to them you would not want done to you.

I guess all of it comes down to, some people feel it's just a game like WoW or whatever and that's great for them. Some of us seem to get involved emotionally and that should be O.K. for us too. We should all respect that everyone feels differently in this matter. I truly never realized such emotions could be felt in sl or any other "game", "platform" or whatever you want to call it. I played TSO long before this and it never had the impact that sl is having on me now. I'm truly amazed.
