Vendetta-Online is another MMOG I play. Recently, all the characters in VO got erased and a backup had to be loaded, leading to the loss of about 10 hours of gaming for almost everyone (I was not affected, having not played between the backup and deletion). Guild Software decided to give one whole week of play free to everyone in compensation.

I'd like to hear the opinion of Second Life players on this, and how it could apply to SL :)

Last year at some point, SL was down for several days. We got a week's credit on our accounts.

Didn't this happen once before in SL? I can't remember..

...anyways, my (skewed) memory remembers LLab giving everyone on during the time of the server wipe an extra week or two of tier, or something.

Today, if the servers go down for more than, oh, 30 seconds, you have every person that has ever played SL logging into the forums to post their "OMGWTFBBQ I AM LOSING MONEY FIX IT OR I WILL SUE U!!1111" threads in the Hotline, Technical, General, Off-topic, Land, and Neualtenberg forums en masse. SL players are extremely intolerent of the interruption of their dwell chair ponzi schemes.

Backups happen and are needed in all MMOTs (Massively Multiplayer Online... Things). As a Ragnarok Online player, it does happen all the time to me, and we do tend to get reimbursed with something stupid.

If/when this happens (again) to SL, it won't be such a big deal since everyone will be affected, so there's no harm except the necessitation of accrediting accounts.

Actually, stuff like this is a common occurance in the business.

The only difference is they tend to call it a "rollback."

I think it's a shining example of how to manage a crisis scenario. Why?

We got rolled back and a week's worth of xp, items and transanctions were gone. We also experienced major bugs on our side due to lack of testing on updates and inconveniencing a lot of players.

During all this time, we had to give them free playing time and increased the exp for a week. (-_-)

I haven't experienced any major bugs so far in SL (like Lindens disappearing, and the like) so I'm not sure if they give any compensation. But based on the other players' replies it seems that they do and that's a good thing.

Escape Velocity was a fave of mine. I saw Walton Simons inworld awhile back making some of the ships, like the Kestrel.
