My $0.02 on business in SL (including P2P replacing telehubs)

Okay - everyone chimes in on the GOM downfall to Lindex, now it's P2P killing land barons and telehub values. I have but 1 thing to say.

*The number 1 principal in business - watch your competitors and change your business plan to stay competitive.*

In business, as in life, things are constantly changing and evolving. You may sit on the top of the pile today, but if you don't stay competitive and keep coming up with good ideas you will not stay there long. Every major company in the real world changes to stay alive and the same should be true of business in SL. If Mattel only made Barbie and Hot Wheels they would still sell toys, but they would miss out on a great deal of business. If I buy a piece of rental property 10 years from now the quiet suburban neighborhood may turn into a commercial zone around me.

If I decide to sit back and keep my business model the same, I am the only one to blame for my failure. If I am a great business person I will see the changes coming and refocus my plan and make something valuable out of the change.

ETA - Ok 1 more thing. LOL This is why all great business plans also include an exit strategy. I say this from the perspective of a self employed business owner. I worked in web development in the 90's, and I'm now in the ever changing world of scrapbooking and paper crafting.

Yes, indeed! Could not have said it better.

People who are trying to defend the land owners who polluted the telehubs are biting back by suggesting that the currency might be removed from SL in the future.

Maybe. If the currency becomes completely worthless thanks to hyper-inflation, or is removed entirely, I'll just start accepting PayPal cash payments for my stuff and stop offering it for sale in L$. I've already got that part planned out.

If you don't have a plan to roll with the punches or you're too lazy to come up with one, go grab a seat in a money chair.

Very well said.

No camping chairs, no money balls, no escorts and no land speculation here.

No Tringo (nothing against it, just not into it).

Does that make me a dinosaur?

Only content creation, plus I may let out the land for short, quality events some day - but other than that? Not much.

I'm one happy dinosaur, and so far the good people of SL are rewarding me for it.

Er, no, I'm pretty sure it does not. Sounds like you might be plying a legitimate business. Need more info to say for sure.

Where did you hear this? It seems extraordinary.

Maybe this will result in a shift in focus, where land desireability isn't linked to proximity to a telehub, but how habitable and usable the land actually is.

What a horrible turn of events.

Course, I don't think telehub proximity ever mattered *really*, people just thought it did, or would, and land prices were set accordingly.

Just because a shop is near a telehub doesn't mean it'll get more hits.

Our sales are -higher now- than when Luskwood had a Telehub in it for a month, (which was subsequently removed.) Also, the existence of the telehub, while it was there, didn't effect a damn thing.

On both sides: Whether we keep them or not, i think this is -really- much ado about nothing. It's an argument over whether or not land sellers get to use a bullet point in their materials or not.

It was there for a whole month?

I remember zapping in there one day and going "cool, I don't have to deal with the damned welcome area any more".

Then suddenly it was gone...

I don't know about whether it improved sales or not, but it sure made it less annoying to get to Lusk.

honestly the telehub did have a boost to our social scene, it was more accessable so more people dropped by, but those were by in large people who already had avatars, and were just coming to hang out... sales really didn even blip over the whole thing.

It was cool, if abit hectic, to have that telehub there, but it really was not a make or break deal, it just meant people didn have to spawn in the welcome area for a couple of weeks, tho i will disclaim we are only 1 sim away from a telehub, and we've really tried to make the 'flight' over as simple, convenient, and lag free as possible, so we may not be the *best* overall sample for that, someone 4-5 sims away from a telehub with 2 malls inbetween may have a very different experience

I have zero sympathy for any land baron that hasnt tried to sell their telehub land by now and then once P2P arrives they start crying.
