With all due respect griff, this is not an Internet platform; it's a wora'uld. IMing people from outside The Grid All Hail The Central Grid will ruin their immersion and Linden Lab will protect it's residents against that at all cost.

In other words, because you CAN have an av logged into the world when you communicate with other residents, you SHOULD only be able to contact with them that way. No, it doesn't make sense; but it's common wisdom.

I see your point here, but disagree.

I at first had a problem with SLexchange marketplace, and other webpage based ways to buy SL things out of world.

But, the overall goal of SL is to be easy, convenient, and usable. Receiving messages outside of SL and responding is important to some. People run businesses in SL, and there are times people cannot log in, but need to conduct their business.

And the messages in/out world in it's simplist form can be used like this:
person A: "Hey Dude, you're not in world... log in!"
person B: "Ok, be right there"

Well, except for the fact that they said that Jabber compatibility is in the pipe.

Yes it's flowing right behind Havoc x.0, Speedtree, the new rendering engine, an inworld browser, and a client API.

Ha Ha Jarod just read this and "suggested" to me that LL are beginning to understand that the first thing people want from a platform is to be able to communicate with each other from any Internet location to any Internet location.

He's wrong WronG WRONG I tell you. The first thing people want from a platform is the ability to customize their environment. LL have consistently made the mistake of thinking this means the ability to customize our inworld environment without that ability to customize the interface.

Sorry, that's a bit off-topic eh. The point Jarod is that Philip's concept of world requires that you be inworld when contacting someone so that they know you're logged in and part of their immersive world experience. If they discover that you're chatting with them while fighting your archrival in CoH, attending a guild meeting in WoW, or hacking code in Komodo, their world is cracked opened, ruined for all time, and it's all LL's fault for letting you act as the great destructor of innovative immersion.

It's a better corporate move for them to simply wait and blame those sheep working on the SLoW project.

Doesn't max case have a utility to IM him from his webpage?

The script might be pretty easy to emulate.

But Khamon, what if people are playing for the fun of it, and not for the immersion? I have a wide screen, so I usually have firefox on 1/2 and SL on the other half. I know I'm the minority here, but I just think everyone should have a voice on your opinion. :p

Hmm... maybe I shouldn't have said "for the fun of it." I know I love SL, and it's close to my heart, but usually I don't really feel immersed. 90% of the time in SL, I am on Skype. That has a major buffer from getting immmersed. If jabber comes to SL, it will majorly change it (their immersion) for those that use it.

According to Philip, we're wrong and supposed to be participative residents of a centalized world. According to Philip, we're wrong and supposed to be focusing on the internal commuuuuunity. According to Philip, we're wrong because the immersive features LL provides, such as parcel URLs, are the extent of what we should accept as a Second Life API.

Until we're able to open a browser window in SL, I won't be happy. Heck, even just all of google and I would be in heaven. I challenge you to find something that google can't find. :p

Max Case sells and Email-2-IM device at his store/place in the gaming sim, for only L$25, it allows you to send IM's using external email, but only to those people for who you have obtained thier key and entered it into the notecard inside the device.
