The official builder's guide is up here!

(The guide is only partially complete. I need to add links to photographs of the interior and exterior of representative buildings, as well as add more detail and names. That will come in time though.)

For the smaller structures I plan to build them in districts, starting with District 1 first and finishing with District 6. This should help keep construction manageable. For a short-term goal, we should plan on having a city kickoff and Oktoberfest celebration this weekend.

Look over the web page and decide what you'd like to work on and post it here!

Ulrika,
I need to know the area you want the Kriminalmuseum? I don't see it on the layout. Thanks

I haven't had a chance to mark the location of individual structures yet. Here's what I had in mind for zoning:
  1. District 1 will be large group-owned commercial
  2. District 2 will be large individually owned commercial
  3. District 3 will be premium small individually owned commercial and residential
  4. District 4 will be premium residential
  5. District 5 will be small individually owned commercial
  6. District 6 will be group residential

Thus, the Kriminalmuseum would fit in District 2 (if it's large) and District 5 (if it's small). Personally, I think it would work well near the top of District 2. Your museum, which I think will be very popular, will act as an anchor, drawing visitors to the North of the city.

If you have a different location that you'd prefer, I will certainly accommodate you. Just let me know.

I'll try and get out a map tonight that has more of the individual buildings labeled.

I'd also like to invite feedback on the town layout. If you have any questions or would like to make modifications, post here or send me an email. :)

Thanks Ulrika I'll do my building at the north end then sounds good. Will you have a street layout done soon ? I am having trouble with seeing the layout in world with all of the temp builds still there. Also, once our structures are done will we be able to do terraforming where they are placed ? If anyone would like to build artifacts for the Kriminalmuseum please feel free. I would like it to be as replete as possible in our medium. I will be a couple of days if not a week building the structure so haven't even considered any of the artifacts yet.

I'd like to do the BierGarten if we are going to have one. I will need a place with enough room for the outside garden area. It could be in back, front, or to the side.

Lecktor, I might try one or two of the artifacts. :)

Yesterday I started laying out the streets but only had time for the center square and a small slice of road. I think that defining the build by roads will be too time consuming. So instead, tonight I'm going to go in and divide and label the land for each structure and district. I'll also add vertical markers to label where each district, street, and house goes.

I'll also put online pictures of what the structures should look like. I want to try to adhere as closely as possible to the Rothenburg design for structures in Districts 1 and 2, so we have an accurate representation of a real-world Bavarian town center. As we move from the center we can be more creative.

The only real terraforming that will be done is in the town center. I want the church, town square, and District 1 to be on the same plane, otherwise we'll build with the terrain. I think having structures that step up and down with the slope will give us a very natural nonlinear look. I will also go over the entire terrain with the smooth tool, as the land is currently "stepped".

Also almost all of the snow covered ground will be covered with streets and sidewalks, so it is possible to build structures and streets that are a few meters above the ground.

OK. I cut up and labeled the land to match the districts and buildings shown in the builder's guide.

Sign up here for a structure or district as either a lead or contributor. :)

Ulrika,
I'd like lead on Kriminalmuseum and Kendra has expressed interest as being on this with me.

I'll take the lead for the Biergarten. I'm building next to the Kriminalmuseum and I will probably help with that also.

Groovy! I'm not sure where to put the Biergarten though, as there is not a lot of open land. I wanted a restaurant in District 1 right off of the town square but unfortunately there is no room for an outdoor Biergarten. Hmm.

Lecktor is building the Kriminalmuseum in District 2 up in the north of the city (see http://www.ulrikasheim.org/neualtenburg/guide.html). We might be able to squeeze a Biergarten in map section D4 right to the right of District 1. As a matter of fact, we could make the corner District 1 building a restaurant with a Biergarten behind it, as long as it's not too big. It'll have a great view of the castle too! What do you think?

Might as well sign me up as lead on City Wall --considering I've already started modifying and implementing Skunken's original prototype.

I think that would be a good place. I like the view of the castle and the Senate being that close is a good idea too. :)

I agree! I'll officially make that building a restaurant and add the Biergarten to the map behind that structure. I'll have the updated maps up in a day or two.

I was thinking we should make our official beer "Augustiner Braeu". It's Munich's oldest brewery and very difficult to get in the U.S.

Groovy! I'll mark it down.

I was also thinking we should modify the height of the wall to be lower near the steep ridge similar to Rothenburg where they weren't vulnerable to attack. It would also give the premium homes near the edge have a good view. :)

Neualtenbraeu it is! :)

:p --(*glug glug*)
:D --(Yum!)
 --(*burp*)

In German they would spell it as "Neualtenbräu" with a diaeresis over the "a", similar to how Spinal Tap puts a diaeresis over the "n". ;)

(That's right! Five smilies in one post.)

MoMA

I'll be kicking off the MoMA in the next 24-48 hours (hopefully later tonight), I've been house sitting for my mom who is currently in Uganda on a humanitarian trip with our church. They have dialup at their house, so Second Life has been undoable for the past 6 days for me, but I will hopefully be at a place with broadband this evening.

On the guide page I have images of the Bilbao Guggenheim museum. I was hoping for a similar structure that was completely postmodern with a lot of metal and glass texture with no cylinders or boxes at all -- everything curvilinear on the outside. On the inside it can be completely different.

I'd like to recommend that we keep the inside very easy to navigate. Perhaps a single upward spiral like the Guggenheim in New York so we don't have to worry about floors and visitors can bail out by jumping over the rail and flying through a phantom ceiling. (I was in a gallery once and it was like a prison. I couldn't get out.)

The space allotted is a circle with an area of about 900 m^2 (a diameter of about 32 m). The maximum height for the building is 40 m tall. Anything higher and it will be taller than the church and the city-hall tower and could dominate the city.

Feel free to take your time and really explore this one. It will be one of two dominant modern pieces in the city and thus will be the subject of great controversy. If we do it right about half the people will love it and the other half will hate it. If we do it wrong everyone will hate it. ;)

If you do like the idea of metal, I recommend contacting Cubey Terra. He has some amazing metallic textures that he uses on his planes.

Ulrika,

I have laid out seven 12.5 x 15 platforms in the general area of District 1. Is that steep mountain going to stay there? If it is, will it stay that steep? It really cuts down on the size of the buildings unless they are way high up on the side of the mountain. The restaurant backs right up to the mountain, so the biergarten will not be possible there because the glasses will slide off the tables. :D

Yes. Let's let the buildings climb up and down the sides of the hills with the streets moving up and down to meet them. It will take a some creativity. No snow will be showing so we can use stone plazas to help level out the terrain a bit although I do want to keep a "streets of San Francisco" feel to the city.

As for the Biergarten, I'll level out some land a bit to help.
